The Power of Your Story
“The idea is not to live forever, but to create something that will.” – Andy Warhol
In my many years of encouraging and supporting leaders to share their stories, I’ve been continually amazed by one thing: how often leaders underestimate the potential impact their stories hold. Time and again, I’ve met people who believed their experiences were too ordinary, too personal, or too unpolished to matter. And yet, when they took the bold step to write and share their journeys, they were equally amazed—sometimes overwhelmed—by the doors it opened and the lives it touched.
Building a Book That Transforms
Books don’t just happen—they are built. From the first spark of inspiration to the final printed page, the journey of writing a transformational book is one of discipline, purpose, and impact.
Every leader has a story, a message, or a lesson worth sharing. But how does one go from an idea to creating a book that truly makes a difference?
It starts with clarity. You must know who you are writing for and what change you want to see in them. Many books are written, but few are remembered. The ones that endure are rooted in truth, shaped with intentionality, and driven by purpose. Writing is not merely the act of transferring information—it’s about igniting transformation.
To begin, take time to define your core message in one sentence. Think through the journey you want your reader to experience. Set aside time daily to write—even a short, consistent commitment helps build momentum. Don’t wait until the manuscript is perfect before you invite input; seek feedback early. And remember, publishing a book is not a solo act. It’s a collaborative process, strengthened by guidance, encouragement, and community.
My Journey: From Burden to Book
When I co-edited The Resilient Christian Leader, it began with a burden—to guide organizations navigating transitions and crises. The writing process didn’t just refine the message; it refined me. It forced clarity, deepened conviction, and ultimately gave birth to a resource that continues to open doors and touch lives around the world.
